Twisted Secrets by Katee Robert: FAQs + Books Like It

My life is about as far from a mafia romance as you can get. It's why I enjoy books with the trope, such as Twisted Secrets by Katee Robert, as much as I do. (Kindle | Kobo | Paperback)

For a few hours, I get to live vicariously through a son or daughter of a mob boss from the comfort of my own home. As someone who is a serial rule-follower and anxiety-ridden mess some days, mafia romance books are about as close as I'll ever get to the real deal (and that's a good thing).

Now, if you're here reading this article, I imagine that's because you're looking for one of two things; you either want answers to questions you have about the book or are looking for books like Twisted Secrets by Katee Robert to read next. In either case, I have you covered! Just keep scrolling. (Warning: This article contains spoilers)

What Is Twisted Secrets by Katee Robert About?

Twisted Secrets is a mafia romance and the third book in Katee Robert's series, The O'Malleys. It's about Olivia Rashidi, a single mom who is on the run from her family in the New York City Russian mob, and her complicated relationship with Cillian O'Malley, the son of Boston's notorious Irish mob boss. Here is the official description for the book:

"Greed. Ambition. Violence. Those are the 'values' Olivia Rashidi learned from her Russian mob family-and the values she must leave behind for the sake of her daughter. When she meets Cillian O'Malley, she recognizes the red flag of his family name... yet she still can't stop herself from seeing the smoldering, tortured man. To save her family, Olivia sets out to discover Cillian's own secrets, but the real revelation is how fast and how hard family and she's falling for him.

Plagued by a violent past, Cillian is more vulnerable than anyone realizes. Anyone except Olivia, whose beauty, compassion, and pride have him at "hello," even if she's more inclined to say goodbye to an O'Malley. While his proposal of sex with no strings seems simple, what he feels for her isn't, especially after he learns that she belongs to a rival crime family. Cillian knows that there is no escape from the life, but Olivia may be worth trying and dying for..."

Does Twisted Secrets Have a Happy Ending?

Yes - Twisted Secrets has a happy ending! A few nights after arriving at the O'Malley country home, Sergei sneaks onto the grounds, kills three men, and injures two so that he can break into the house to kidnap his and Olivia's daughter, Hadley. When Olivia and Cillian discover Hadley is missing in the morning, they return to Cillian's family home in Boston together and confront Olivia's half-brother, Dmitri Romanov. Dmitri assures her he had nothing to do with it and that Sergei has gone rogue. He does, however, provide them with the address to Sergei's aunt's house where he believes he would be hiding out. When they arrive, Olivia confronts Sergei but is attacked by him and shot. Cillian shoots and kills Sergei, locates Hadley, and gets both women back to safety. Back in Boston, Olivia makes a deal with Dimitri that she will never rejoin the Romanov family but that he can visit his niece periodically. So, in the end, everyone's happy (except for Sergei because he's dead).

5 Books Like Twisted Secrets by Katee Robert

Obviously, the most similar books to Twisted Secrets are the other five books in The O'Malley series. However, if you want to branch out a bit and explore other options beyond the series, here are five mafia romance books like Twisted Secrets with the single-parent trope that I'd recommend you consider making your next read.

My Destiny by Samantha Skye

1. My Destiny by Samantha Skye

If there's one book that's the most similar to Twisted Secrets, it's Samantha Skye's mafia romance, My Destiny. Just read the description and you'll see what I mean: "My life has a use-by date. But Dante Luciano can use me all he likes... Most people fight tooth and nail against unfairness. But my childhood was a masterclass in life ain’t meant to be easy, so I befriended acceptance a long time ago. It’s part of the reason I can seize the moment, escape the inescapable (for now)... jump on a plane to New York and know the only way I’m coming back is in a box. I should have been terrified when I got caught in the crossfire of the Mob, but when Dante threw his body in front of me, I felt alive for all the right reasons. Slipping into his life (and his bed sheets) is as easy as breathing. But Dante hates liars. So he’s going to hate me."

Sweet Temptation by Cora Reilly

2. Sweet Temptation by Cora Reilly

Core Reilly's mafia romance, Sweet Temptation, about a single dad who also just happens to be a mob boss in Philadelphia, doesn't just have 4.03 out of 5 stars and 50,000+ ratings; in 2020, it was also a GoodReads Choice Awards nominee for Best Romance. Sound interesting? Here's a full description: "After losing his wife, Cassio is left to take care of two small children while trying to establish his rule over Philadelphia. Now he needs a mother for his children, and someone who can warm his bed at night. But in a traditional world like his, choosing your wife is duty not pleasure. That’s how he ends up with a woman barely of age. She might not be what he and his children need, but she’s a sweet temptation he can’t resist. Giulia always knew she’d marry a man her father chose for her. Now she’s supposed to be a mother to two small children when she hasn’t even held a baby in her life. Her mother always warned her that men of power like Cassio don’t tolerate insolence; yet, tired of being treated as a nanny and clueless child-bride, Giulia decides to fight for her vision of a happy family."

Catalyst by Nicole Fanning

3. Catalyst by Nicole Fanning

Like Twisted Secrets, Nicola Fanning's book, Catalyst, is also a mafia romance that features the single-parent trope. However, one difference is that the love story between the main characters is told over the course of four books. So, if you end up liking this one, then you'll be busy reading the rest of the series for a little while. Here's what it's about exactly: "When Natalie Tyler arrives in Chicago to attend her cousin's wedding, all she wants is to survive the week with her estranged family and ex-fiancé. However, a split-second decision unknowingly puts her in the path of the city's wealthiest (and deadliest) bachelor - Jaxon Pace. Billionaire. Hotelier. Mafia Boss. Jaxon is used to getting what he wants and he wants Natalie, even if she didn't come to Chicago for love. But soon she begins to wonder if there is more to this handsome and mysterious man than meets the eye?"

A Kiss of Venom by Beena Khan

4. A Kiss of Venom by Beena Khan

While Olivia in Twisted Secrets was a single mom and member of a rival mafia family who falls in love with a man in the mafia, the female main character in A Kiss of Venom is a single mom and an FBI agent who falls in love with a man in the mafia. There's no doubt that this added twist will make this an interesting follow-up read to Twisted Secrets. Here's the description: "I've been in a coma for the past three years after an accident that left me unconscious and widowed. Now, I’m just your average hot mess single mom working on a case for the FBI involving one of the most dangerous men in New York City - Tyrant Alexander Nikolaev, the Pakhan of the Russian Bratva. They say all great love stories have happy endings, but mine has already ended in a tragedy.... and yet he's awakening something in me that's both dark and tantalizing. Kill him or kiss him, I can't decide. I'm getting ensnared in his trap and no one can save me. Welcome to New York's Underworld."

Ruthless Vow by Willow Fox

5. Ruthless Vow by Willow Fox

The final mafia romance with the single parent trope I have to recommend as a follow-up to Twisted Secrets is Ruthless Vow by Willow Fox. It isn't your average single-parent romance though and Coastie Mom's GoodReads review explains why that is: "Talk about fighting to protect those you care about – even if you don’t know that those are you own children! This was an intense, dark, bratva vs. mafia story. The Italians vs. the Russians. Only what happens when one from each side have one wild night that ends up with 2 kids? More drama, betrayal, secrets, misunderstandings and realizing what is most important. Antonio and Aleksandra don’t expect to ever see each other again, but when Antonio is ordered by Roberto to kidnap a child who just happens to be the nephew of your enemy, you know the story is about to get better! The banter between Antonio and Aleksandra is hilarious. She is feisty, strong, an fierce. She’s not afraid to stand up and protect her kids. I loved the passion, intensity, and darkness this story brought."
