Garrett Graham and Hannah Wells might go to the same college but they live in different worlds. He's the captain of the hockey team; a jock and a ladies' man. Hannah, on the hand, is a music major who keeps to her own. But when Garrett fails their ethics exam and finds out Hannah aced hers, he's desperate to get her to tutor him. So desperate, in fact, that he offers her a deal: tutor him and he'll help Hannah catch the attention of the mysterious new football player she's been crushing on for months. But as the two begin their tutoring sessions, they begin to see that there's more to each of them than first meets the eye. Is it possible that the person they least expected, is the person they didn't know they needed most?

Yes - The Deal is the first book in Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series. The series consists of five books in total, with each book focusing on a different man on Briar University's hockey team and their love story. Given that The Deal is the first book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. On the other hand, if you wish to read the series in order, then here the official order of the Off-Campus series:

  1. The Deal - Garrett and Hannah

  2. The Mistake - John (Logan) and Grace

  3. The Score - Dean and Allie

However, he tells her Garrett made it known to a significant number of guys on campus to keep their hands off of her. When she storms into the hockey team's dressing room to confront Garrett, he finally gets her to confess that it was his father behind the breakup. He also explains that if she had told him, it wouldn't have been an issue since he had been granted access to the trust left to him by his grandparents. The two are then more than happy to get back together.

5 Books Like The Deal by Elle Kennedy

The books most like The Deal will obviously be the other books in the Off-Campus series. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of others beyond the series. In fact, here are my top five recommendations for books like The Deal for you to consider making your next hockey romance read.

First Down by Grace Reilly

1. First Down by Grace Reilly

When I went to find books like The Deal, I expected to find books that were similar. First Down by Grace Reilly isn't just similar though, it's almost identical, minus the fact it's about a football player instead of a hockey player. Just read the description and you'll see what I mean: "Football is my everything. I live, eat, and breathe the sport. But when I transfer to McKee University to escape the distractions that nearly cost me my future in the NFL, I’m faced with another consequence: retake and pass the writing class I failed at my last college, or lose any chance I have at making it big. That’s where fellow senior Beckett Wood - gorgeous, stubborn, and just my type - comes in. She’s the key to my success in this class… but the price of her help is a fake relationship, and I never do things halfway."

Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

2. Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

If you thought Garrett from The Deal was a good book boyfriend, just wait until you meet Nathan Hawkins in Icebreaker by Hannah Grace. Like Garett, he's the captain of his college hockey team and sweet as pie. The rest of the book, however, is actually quite different, so you won't feel like you're just reading a repeat. Here's what it's about: Anastasia's goal of making it onto the Olympic figure skating team is within her reach after she lands a place on her college's competitive team. Things get complicated though after a facilities mishap forces her to share a rink with the hockey team and an injured partner leaves her with no one else to train with other than the captain of the hockey team - Nate Hawkins. As the two begin working together, sparks fly. But Anastasia isn’t worried…because she could never fall for a hockey player. Right?"

Offside by Avery Keelan

3. Offside by Avery Keelan

When I read that Offside by Avery Keelan was about a hockey captain with subpar grades, I obviously thought of Garrett from The Deal. While the two men are obviously quite different in other ways, as is the plot of the book, this is one book that repeatedly comes up whenever The Deal or hockey romance books are discussed on BookTok. Here's the description: "After being dumped on her 21st birthday, Bailey rebounds right into the arms of her ex’s biggest competition, Chase Carter: Antagonizer, womanizer, and infamous left winger for her college’s rival team. Chase, on the other hand, is on thin ice with his teammates and tyrannical coach after a series of scandals and substandard grades. So, the last thing he needs is to have his focus and loyalty called into question by fraternizing with the enemy. But what if the enemy is impossible to resist?"

A Favor for a Favor by Helena Hunting

4. A Favor for a Favor by Helena Hunting

The similarity between this book and The Deal is right there in the title - A Favor for a Favor. Unlike The Deal though, this book doesn't take place in college, but in the NHL, which might be interesting for those of you who like slightly older characters. Here's what it's about exactly: "When I joined Seattle’s NHL expansion team, I thought it was the start of something great. But nothing ever goes the way you expect. Take my introduction to my new neighbor. She came rolling in on the hot mess express at midnight. So, imagine my surprise when I end up with an injury that has me out of the game for weeks, and she’s the one to offer to help me in return for a favor. The agreement? She'll help me get back on the ice sooner, so she can add a professional athlete that isn’t her brother to her client list. It should be easy, so long as I can keep my hands to myself."

Consider Me by Becka Mack

5. Consider Me by Becka Mack

Last but not least is another hockey romance about a cocky(...😏) team captain. While The Deal was decently spicy, it doesn't even compare to the books in Becka Mack's Playing for Keeps series. So if that's something you want more of in your next read, go for Consider Me. Here's what it's about: "Carter Beckett is the NHL's resident bad boy. He's a top player both on the ice and in the bedroom. And now apparently, he has his sights set on me. His only problem? I have no intention of falling for his shi— charm. But when I start letting my guard down and he starts showing me pieces of himself I had no intention of seeing, the bricks surrounding me may be tumbling down. But I’m not sold yet, which means for the first time in his life, Carter’s the one begging."
